As part of our RE topic on Judaism, we looked at some Jewish artefacts, made our own Mezuzah and did some work in our books about Hanukkah and the Menorah.
We had lots of fun on our outdoor learning day. The drizzly rain certainly didn’t stop us. We made two different kinds of bird feeder, planted seeds, did a scavenger hunt, hugged trees, went on a bug hunt and even had time to do a bit of bird watching!Fun, fun, fun!

For Black History Month, Year One studied the amazing gymnast Simone Biles. We made our own Olympic medals, wrote about Simone and did lots of gymnastics art.

We all enjoyed sharing photos of ourselves and our families.
We have been learning about our senses through the story of Helen Keller. Helen was deaf and blind but never let it hold her back. She learned to read using Braille and learned to speak with the help of her teacher. What an inspiration!In class we made our own ‘Braille’ names, practiced writing our own name in Braille, and tried colouring pictures, making models and moving around without seeing.
For Roald Dahl day, we read some of The Twits and looked at the character if Mr Twit. We pretended to comb through his beard to see what disgusting things we could find and then made our own Mr Twit beard. Yuck!

Poppy fields by Maple Class. We made a wash background before printing with various sponges to create the poppies. Finally we used a thin brush to paint the stems. Lest We Forget.

World Mental Health Day 2020 - We watched Mrs Vango’s Mindfulness film ‘Bubbles’ (this can be found in the year 1 section of the video resource centre), and decided to put all our worries into bubbles and let them float away.
Self Portraits in the style of Pablo Picasso. We looked at the work of Picasso and learned about cubism. We created our own self portraits in his style.
Look at all the different activities we did this week relating to our senses. We looked in particular at sight and the challenges faced by those who are blind. We found that we couldn’t read ordinary books and so learned about Braille and made our own Braille names. We tried lots of activities using our blindfolds too; playing guess the object, help a friend along an obstacle course, threading bobbins, drawing pictures and building towers. Then we made cool funky glasses with coloured lenses. Lots of fun!
In RE this week we talked about our families, how they are all different and lots of ways that they show us love. We made heart puppets of ourselves, members of our family and a special love heart to say thank you to God for giving us amazing families to love and care for us.

We do lots of flipper flappper maths counting. This was one of our first practices.
Our first couple of weeks in Year One. We have been busy counting, adding, writing sentences and labels, being active and doing lots of phonics activities.
Wow, Christmas drawings!
Marvellous Multicultural week. Maple class learned about India. We made lotus flowers, made paper Diva lamps, tried Bhangra dancing with Mr Gupta, made Dandiya sticks and used them in dance, created our own mehndi patterns, had Noor visit to do mehndi on our hands, read about India, decorated dough elephants and much more!
