School Sport at SMG

Through sport we believe we are enabling our children to shine with God's love, pride and success now and later in life.

This is now more important than ever after disruption to normal school life after the pandemic. We are proud to give our children as many opportunities as possible to grow and thrive through sport as a school.

At SMG we are proud of our efforts and commitment to sport within our school community. We aim to aspire and inspire using sport, continuing to plan our sporting strategy with intent, to implement the necessary steps to ensure that our work in sport has maximum impact for our children now and in the future.

Our sporting aim is to give EVERY child in school the chance to represent their school through sporting competitions throughout the year in multiple sports if possible. With this in mind we aim to enter all events on offer this year in the Preston PESSPA sporting calendar.

We are aiming to give our children as many opportunities as possible through sport through events arranged by the Preston PESSPA partnership: Preston Primary School Sports Council, PNE Community Trust and Preston School Games.

Our results and league tables in Hockey, Tag Rugby, Netball, Boys Football, Girls Football, Cricket and Rounders can be found at

SMG becomes a Get Set Beacon

We are also equally proud to have our children as ambassadors of sport in our wider community. After submitting our plans, we were proudly selected as 1 of only 40 schools nationally to become a 'Get Set Beacon' for 2018/2019. We are now linked with and accredited as a Team GB/Paralympics GB ambassador of Sport and Physical Activity in our community for 2018-2019.

St Maria Goretti Get Set Beacon 2018-2019

During the academic year, we have led a number of physical activity and sporting projects within our community. We have been able to enhance and establish links with the local school sports partners and have again applied to be considered for this accreditation into 2019/2020.

So far this year (2018/2019) our projects have been:

Autumn - Parent and child kickboxing sessions with Gemma Wilcockson, the former World Kickboxing Champion from Lancashire Kickboxing

Spring - A couch to 5k running club for all, which ran three times a week and was led by our children

Summer -Healthy Eating and School Sports Week 2019 Monday July 1st - Saturday July 6th 2019

Healthy eating is also a key ingredient in the battle against childhood obesity and we believe in combining this with sport and physical activity to encourage young people to live active and healthy lives. We launched a Healthy Eating and School Sport week in 2018 with support from United Utilities and Asda and we repeated this week again in July 2019, just bigger and better!

Preston Primary Schools and School Games Competitions 2018/2019

As a school we endeavour to seize competitive opportunities for the children across the age groups. The passion and enthusiasm from the children to represent our school in a variety of sports continues to grow. At St Maria Goretti we believe it is every child’s right to represent the school at sport and that this right is just as important as any other curriculum subject.

With this in mind, in 2018/2019 we have entered every possible sporting competition (often entering multiple teams) and have provided a higher than ever percentage of pupils with a chance to wear the badge and represent their school in sport with pride. With most classes having a 100% representation rate!

This year we have entered, Cluster,Preston Primary Schools and School Games organised competitions in the following sports: Football (boys and girls), Tag Rugby, Hockey, Netball, Cricket, Orienteering, Indoor Athletics, Gymnastics, Multi-skills, Cross country running, Triathlon, New Age Kurling, Tennis and Ultimate Frisbee.

Preston Primary School Sports Festival Friday 14th June 2019

In an event which culminates the Preston Primary Schools Sports calendar, we again traveled en mass to have a great day at UCLan Sports Arena for the 2019 Preston School Sport/PNE Sports Festival. Taking 55 children across 8 teams representing SMG.

Lots of smiles, sporting skills and amazing teamwork were on show. Results wise we showed our vast improvement from last year with 3 teams making it to the last 6. With Year 3/4 Boys Football and Tennis performing amazingly and getting so close to trophies but just missing out.

However, our Girls Frisbee with 7 wins out of 7 and CHAMPIONS.

Bringing home our first silverware of the year!

All the children did themselves proud and showed SMG shining with love, pride and success through sport.
