Design and Technology at SMG

Design and Technology is an inspiring and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts. Through our curriculum, the children also learn about cooking and nutrition. As part of their work with food, pupils are taught how to cook and apply the principles of nutrition and healthy eating. The Design and Technology curriculum at SMG offers a coherently planned sequence of lessons that encourage our children to be involved and to think as designers. The Early Years framework is the foundation of the knowledge and skills taught at SMG and provides the building blocks for all future learning in Design and Technology. We use the National Curriculum alongside the PLAN It document to help teachers ensure they have progressively covered the knowledge, understanding and skills required. We aim to inspire our children through offering a broad range of practical experiences to create innovative designs which solve real and relevant problems within a variety of different contexts. The children plan, make, take risks and evaluate each piece of work to see the process from start to finish. Opportunities are provided for children to evaluate key events and individuals who have helped shape the world, showing the real impact of design and technology on the wider environment and helping to inspire children to become the next generation of innovators.

Design Technology is taught through a number of mini projects throughout the year.

Children become confident, independent learners in Design technology who can plan, make and evaluate.
